Eye movement desensitisation reprocessing (EMDR)
Dr Loft is an Accredited EMDR (Eye movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) therapist which may be particularly valuable for clients seeking support with trauma and complex emotional experiences.
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured psychotherapy designed to help people process and heal from traumatic memories and related distress. Developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987, it targets conditions like PTSD by facilitating the brain's natural information processing system.
Primarily for PTSD and trauma, EMDR also treats anxiety, depression, and other distress from adverse life events. Sessions (6-12 typically) don't require detailed trauma retelling, making it accessible for those who find talking overwhelming.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
CBT is a structured, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour to improve emotional wellbeing. It focuses on the connections between thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment.
CBT operates on the principle that distorted or negative thoughts contribute to emotional distress and problematic behaviours. Therapists collaborate with clients to challenge these thoughts through practical techniques like cognitive restructuring, behavioural experiments, and skill-building exercises, typically over 6-20 focused sessions.
Clients learn lasting coping strategies to manage anxiety, depression, stress, and other challenges. Unlike purely exploratory therapies, CBT is goal-oriented and action-focused and empower’s people to more effectively manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. CBT effectively treats conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD and OCD.
Solution focused brief therapy (SFBT)
SFBT is a short-term, goal-oriented approach that focuses on building solutions and supporting client strengths rather than dwelling on problems or past causes. Therapists use targeted questions to help clients envision their preferred future, identify "exceptions" to problems (times when things went better), and amplify what already works.
SFBT empowers clients quickly by shifting focus to actionable steps and resilience, making it ideal for those seeking practical change without deep exploration of trauma or history. It's evidence-based for anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and behavioral goals, with strong outcomes in brief formats.
